The Norfolk Photography Tours Story...

Norfolk Photography Walks were first started in 2019 with the aim of offering guests the chance to learn and practice photography in Norfolk's finest locations, they are researched, planned and hosted by West Norfolk photographer Jon Clifton. Along with years of photography experience and various qualifications, Jon has an incredible knowledge of the Norfolk coast so feels well placed to share his skills with those who'd like to learn and explore with him. As each year passes, Jon tries to build things further, 2025 saw the introduction of residential weekend photography breaks. In 2026 the group spent a weekend in Venice and the photo walks name changed to Norfolk Photography Tours, a change made to to cover the full range of events now offered.

Jon has loved photography from an early age and has fond memories of developing mono film and creating prints in a makeshift darkroom with his dad. He learnt the basics using film cameras before studying photography at college, firstly at A-Level and then during a 4 year media production course which included photography, videography and graphic design modules. Following a move to Norfolk 16 years ago, Jon decided to brush up on his digital camera skills and studied for separate diploma's in digital imaging, wedding photography and image processing. Photography is Jon's passion, it's something he loves to do and something he loves to share with people along with his favourite places.

Jon started photo walks so that guests could learn/practice a brilliant hobby, explore beautiful places and meet new people. All things he found beneficial to his own well being after a difficult time and something he felt others might benefit from. Good ideas are often born from experience and it was important for Jon turn a difficult life experience and subsequent recovery into something positive. With this in mind, Jon deeply values and appreciates the people who choose to spend time with him. He hosts and teaches with patience, kindness and empathy, everyone is treated equally. Photo walks are a space to escape and be lifted up, he already thinks you're amazing, just for reading this far.

Group walks are social events aimed primarily at beginner and hobbyist photographers. They provide opportunities for guests to learn the basics and practice photography in beautiful locations. Photography is a practical skill so rather than spend our time in a hall or classroom, we're actually out and about, learning is 'hand's on',  there is no better way to learn than to try.

At the start of each group walk/workshop, guests are given some themes for the session, these can range from simple visual ideas (textures/colours) to adding emotion into images... themes are designed to enhance creative vision and are specific to locations and weather conditions. During a walk, you might choose to use the provided themes or shoot your own way. Whatever you choose to shoot, Jon will never be far away and is always happy to offer advice on camera controls/modes and composition. You'll feel welcomed, valued and encouraged with every click of the shutter.

At various points during a walk, the group will split, Jon will make his way around people individually to answer any questions and offer more specific advice where needed. Groups sizes vary depending on location but are limited to a maximum of 8 people.

Jon likes the events to have a sense of freedom for those who come along. We all see and interpret the world differently and photography is a way of sharing our personal vision of the world with others. Jon believes that artistic individuality is to be treasured and encouraged, also that through adopting simple techniques, snapshots can be turned into eye catching and immersive images.

Due to the mix of abilities and camera types, group photo walks aren't intended to be in depth technical tuition sessions (these tend to work best on a 1-2-1 or couples basis, more info available > here <) but focus more on composition, visual storytelling and simple tips to improve your image making. If you do have questions about different camera modes, settings and terminology, Jon will explain things in a way that is easy to understand, you'll be given suggestions of different things to practice. Whether you have the most expensive camera or a smartphone, photo walk events aren't a competition. Photography is a skill in which there is always something new we can all learn. At the forefront of all events is a feeling that photography is meant to be fun.

Group and 1-2-1 walks are dependent on the weather, if there's a forecast of heavy rain or any form of weather warning, the event will be postponed or cancelled with 24+ hours emailed notice. Some special events require pre booked tickets for attractions, these events may still go ahead in poor weather. This is clearly stated on upcoming event pages.

Those lucky enough to be under 16 are welcome but must be accompanied by a full paying adult. Due to the uneven terrain we cross, walks may not be suitable for younger children in buggies/pushchairs or wheelchair users. Please email if you require guidance for a specific event.

Walk locations are fully researched and risk assessed before each visit. Locations are picked to showcase the very best of Norfolk and other locations Jon knows well.

Images from previous events are available on the various photo walks social media pages. A selection of images from previous events can be seen in the gallery. Photo walks are also on Instagram and Facebook
